Dave Cannon is a Nutrition and Dietetic Technician Registered, a certified personal trainer, and is qualified to teach yoga as well as Pilates. He is an avid chef and has had many years of experience honing his skills in the kitchen. In addition, Dave has experience working with individuals recovering from substance abuse and addiction in both groups and in one-on-one individual settings.

Nutrition Education

Dave is available for individual, family, or group counseling sessions focusing on nutrition and healthy lifestyles. These meetings include special events and workshops and can cover a wide variety of nutrition topics. Some examples of classes include drug and nutrient interactions, plant-based diets, obesity, and organic food practices. Classes can be customized to fit gender and age specific groups, and are tailored to meet the particular needs and understanding of the participants.

Personal Training

Dave is certified as a personal trainer through the National Academy of Sports Medicine. He has an athletics background that includes years of playing ice hockey and tennis, as well as individual sports including triathlon, surfing, and long distance running. As a both a yoga and Pilates practitioner and instructor, he believes that achieving a balance between a fit body and mind are essential for achieving happiness and wellness. Dave can provide personalized private training sessions as well as group fitness programs that span from strength training, flexibility, cardiovascular work, or a combination of different modalities.

Culinary Education

Cooking is something Dave is passionate about and loves spending time doing. His approach in the kitchen is one of using fresh, simple ingredients, and believes that things don’t have to be complicated to be delicious. When cooking, he emphasizes using unprocessed foods that are closest to their natural state, and encourages individuals to have fun in the kitchen trying new things. Dave is available for personal in-home cooking lessons ranging from basic knife skills and preparation to more advanced practices.

Consulting

There are a number of specific consulting options available including menu planning, grocery shopping trips, wellness programs, and meditation walks. Dave is also available as a sober companion as well as a nutrition companion for a variety of different situations. Depending on the unique needs of the individual, Dave can provide his experience and expertise to design a personalized plan geared toward the success of the client.

David became a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) in 2013 and founded Nutrition in Recovery, a group practice of RDNs specializing in treating eating and substance use disorders. In 2017, David received the “Excellence in Practice” award at the National Food and Nutrition Conference and Expo. The California Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics awarded him the “Emerging Dietetic Leader Award” in 2020. He earned his Ph.D. from UCLA’s Fielding School of Public Health in the Community Health Sciences department (with a minor in Health Psychology) by investigating the links between adverse childhood experiences and various mental health outcomes among socially disadvantaged men. His treatment philosophy is based on a biopsychosocial model which incorporates an understanding of biological mechanisms, psychological underpinnings, and contextual factors that integrate the social determinants of health.
