As I began to look for professionals in Southern California that specialize in this field, I realized that there were not as many as I might have thought. During my initial searching, I was very fortunate to come across an individual named David Wiss that not only works with this population, but also excels and is a leader in the field. David has his Master’s Degree from Cal State Northridge, and started his own company called Nutrition in Recovery, which specializes in the treatment of eating disorders and addiction.
Fortunately for me, his office is located close to my home, and I was able to attend a lecture he was giving at a local college on the topic of hormones and addiction. I stayed behind after the presentation was finished and introduced myself and expressed my interest in the field. Over the next year, as I completed the coursework for my Associate’s Degree as a DTR, I kept in touch, and was able to attend some other functions he was involved in. When it came time to fulfill my internship hours to graduate, I was fortunate enough to complete the education a training portion of the program with his guidance.
The experience of working in the private sector with David and Nutrition in Recovery was quite a bit different than my rotations for medical nutrition therapy and food service. With his company, David works with a number of different facilities that treat eating disorders, food addiction, and substance abuse. In addition to working inside treatment centers in the Los Angeles area, he also sees clients privately in his office. The number of settings that I was able to work in during my month long internship really helped me to see how different locations work, and how nutrition can play a major role in helping to treat these different conditions.
